A night to remember: over 1400 people joined the 8th edition of Quiz Night XL! After an exciting battle this mega-quiz, which has been held in Eindhoven every year since 2011, was won by ‘Thales Rocks your Physics’.
A total of 282 teams of 5 people competed in this unique Science & Technology knowledge quiz during the Dutch Technology Week. On top of usual suspects Philips, ASML and TU/e playing in large numbers, over 40 different regional tech companies took part in Quiz Night XL with one or several teams: from Intel to DAF, from Bosch to VDL, from TNO to NXP and many more. Sioux, the main partner of Quiz Night XL; participated with a whopping 20 teams – a great turnout. Their top scoring team “Slimoentjes” finished in 2nd place, an incredible result!
As always, Quiz Night XL was hosted by Number 42’s Julinka van Keulen, supported by ‘rockstar of technology’ Maarten Steinbuch. In this year’s edition we found out about black hole photography, curing a hangover, the genius system behind the old school game Duck Hunt, robot dogs and drones that made history, the upcoming 5G network and much, much more! In spite of Maarten’s initial assessment of the quiz being “easier than last year”, it actually proved to be slightly more challenging than the 2018 edition.
Quiz Night XL was won by the Thales Rocks your Physics. A team of 5 guys, who were taking part in Quiz Night XL for the second time. In 2018 they finished tenth and in spite of this promising score, their expectations for the 2019 edition where not high. “The aim was to have a nice evening and not come last” they told quizmaster Julinka. Well, they certainly achieved that! The proud winners took home eternal fame and glory and a shiny new Airfryer XXL courtesy of Philips! This years’ Bright Future Award (average age ≤ 25) was won by was won by ‘the A-team’ (a TU/e team). The final ranking can be found here.
The competition this year was fiercer than ever before. All the winners of the previous Quiz Night XLs were represented in this edition, including last year’s winners ‘De Zesjecultuur’!, A lot of previous winners did very well in this edition, with three of them (“De Zesjescultuur”, “HH Ouwe Lollies” and “Tegen Beter Weten in) making it into the top 5. The entire top 3’s scores were less than 10 points apart. When you can score 10 points on the average question, that means the difference is really minute. It proved a true battle of the titans at Eindhoven’s very own ‘High Tech Olympics’; where even being seconds faster than the other team can make the difference!
